Cooler is the brother of Freeza, he attacked Earth to get revenge for his brother's death. He was defeated by Son Goku.
He later attacked the planet Namek as Metal-Cooler, a bizzare mechanical life-form. He was again defeated, this time by both Goku and Vegeta in a last ditch defense.
